Alicia Keys stuns sans makeup at VMAs

No one can pull off looking this beautiful without makeup.

Soulful songstress Alicia Keys appeared fresh faced without an ounce of makeup on stage to present the Best Male Video Award Sunday night at the VMAs.

Clad in a flowing Just Cavalli red and black dress, the “No One” singer sang an original poem about equality in honor of the 53rd anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech he gave in 1963.

“The Voice” judge’s decision to go sans makeup isn’t new. In a May essay for Lenny, the 35-year-old singer wrote about how makeup was controlling her life and movements.

“Every time I left the house, I would be worried if I didn’t put on makeup: What if someone wanted a picture?? What if they POSTED it??? These were the insecure, superficial, but honest thoughts I was thinking,” she revealed. “And all of it, one way or another, was based too much on what other people thought of me.”

It wasn’t until Keys posed for a photographer without makeup that she had an epiphany.

“I swear it is the strongest, most empowered, most free, and most honestly beautiful that I have ever felt,” she proclaimed. “I don’t want to cover up anymore. Not my face, not my mind, not my soul, not my thoughts, not my dreams, not my struggles, not my emotional growth. Nothing.”

Keys took to Twitter Monday to acknowledge that she has nothing against people who choose to wear cosmetics.

“Y’all, me choosing to be makeup free doesn’t mean I’m anti-makup. Do you!”
