‘Game of Thrones’ may end in a bloodbath

The eighth and final season of HBO’s mega-hit “Game of Thrones” might not be a crowd-pleaser.

That’s according to Iain Glen, who plays the recently Greyscale-free Jorah Mormont. Glen told Indian Express that he found the ending brilliant, “but we will just have to see” if others agree. “With something this big like ‘Game of Thrones,’ you cannot please everyone. All I can say is that we will be doing what we have done before.”

These words are dismal, considering that “Game of Thrones” is popular for its high body count. To list just a few things the show has “done before”: It’s brutally slaughtered beloved characters at a wedding (Robb and Catelyn Stark in Season 3), it’s shoved multiple children out of windows (Bran Stark by Jaime Lannister’s hand in Season 1, poor Tommen Baratheon by his own hand in Season 6) and it’s established that nobody is safe, no matter how prominent their character is (Ned Stark, Oberyn Martell, Margaery Tyrell, the list goes on).

To add another level of foreboding to Glen’s comment, it sounds like the cast’s final table read was a tearjerker. Francesca Orsi, HBO’s senior VP of drama, recently told EW, “By the very end, everyone looked down and looked up and tears were in their eyes … None of the cast had received the scripts prior, and one by one they began falling down to their deaths.”

George R.R. Martin, who wrote the books on which the show is based, has previously described the ending as “bittersweet,” and promised it won’t be a bloodbath.

But as the show has gone on, it’s diverged more and more from the books — and right now, neither the sixth nor the seventh and final book has been published.

Maybe all men must die.

The six-episode final season of “Game of Thrones” will air in 2019.
